Technical Tuesday: The Art of the "Ultra-Soft" Hand Print


Ever printed a dark shirt design so heavy it felt like the customer was wearing a bulletproof vest?

We’ve all been there. You nail the design, burn the screen, and hit the press, only to end up with a stiff, rubbery "bulletproof shield" of plastisol that makes the shirt feel cheap and unbreathable.

If you want to create high-end streetwear, retail-ready garments, or vintage-style tees, you need to master the soft hand. Soft-hand printing isn't magic; it's physics, chemistry, and smart pre-press art building.

Here is how to get feather-light, buttery-soft prints that keep all their detail without sacrificing opacity.

The "Why": Why Soft Prints Win the Game

When a customer picks up a shirt, their first reaction isn't to look at the tag, it’s to touch the print.

A heavy, thick layer of ink blocks the weave of the shirt, trapping heat and creating an uncomfortable, boardy feel. Beyond comfort, heavy ink deposits cause major on-press issues:

  • Fibrillation: Heavy ink pulls on garment fibers during screen peel, making them stick up through the print and creating a fuzzy, rough texture.
  • Registration Nightmares: When you layer thick coat upon thick coat, you create a microscopic "Manhattan skyline" of ink. Subsequent colors can't lay flat on top of the built-up ink, leading to misregistration, dot gain, and mud.

By controlling ink deposit, you reduce production costs, keep your garment flexible, and give the print a buttery-soft feel that customers love.

The "How": Step-by-Step Soft-Hand Execution

Achieving a soft print requires adjusting every variable on press—from the mesh to the artwork itself.


1. High Mesh + Thin Thread (The Ink Gatekeepers)

  • High Mesh Count: Ditch the 110 mesh for underbases. Move up to a 230–280 mesh to throttle back the amount of ink being deposited onto the shirt.
  • Thin Threads: Opt for mesh with a thinner thread diameter . Thinner threads allow ink to flow through easier with crisp definition while keeping the overall ink film profile razor-thin.
  • Control The EOM: Use a 1/1 with sharp side of scoop coater to coat your screens delivering a very thin EOM and controlling the ink deposit.

2. Hard Squeegees & Blade Edge Control

  • Hard Durometer: Use a harder squeegee blade like a 85 durometer. Softer squeegees bend too easily under pressure, acting like a squeegee "shovel" that dumps excess ink into the fabric. A hard blade shears the ink cleanly across the surface.
  • Print ON, Not INTO: Push or pull with just enough pressure to clear the stencil. Driving ink into the core of the garment spreads the fabric weave, stiffens the shirt, and causes dye migration on synthetic blends. You want the ink sitting right on the surface tips.

3. High-Solids, Soft-Hand Bases & Chino Additives

  • Chino / Soft-Hand Base: Mixing a soft-hand or "Chino" base into your plastisol inks thins out the viscosity, lowers the profile of the ink, and dulls down that plastic sheen to leave a matte, vintage-feeling finish.
  • Pre-Shearing Ink: Make sure to thoroughly stir and pre-shear your ink before putting it on the screen so it flows like honey without needing extra squeegee force.

4. Build Art for the Shirt (The Digital Trick)

  • Halftones vs. Solids: Replace large, solid blocks of spot color in your art software with fine halftone dots (e.g., 55–65 LPI) at 80-90% solidity or distressed textures.
  • Let the Shirt Breathe: Use intentional channel separations to knock out areas of black or shadow. Instead of laying down a heavy black ink layer, let the black shirt show through the gaps to create the shadows. The less ink on the fabric, the softer it feels.

The "Result": What You Should See and Feel

If you execute these steps correctly, here’s what rolls off your conveyor dryer:

  • The Touch Test: You can run your hand across the print with your eyes closed and barely feel where the ink starts and the shirt ends.
  • The Flex Test: Stretch the garment laterally. A thick ink layer will crack or pull the shirt violently; a soft-hand print stretches smoothly along with the fabric's natural weave.
  • Visual Clarity: Microscopic detail, razor-sharp edge definition, and zero halftone dot-gain (no muddy midtones or star-shaped distorted dots).

Mastering soft-hand prints turns your press work into fine apparel. Tweak your artwork separations today, push your mesh counts higher, and ditch the heavy ink laydowns!

Pro Tip: When setting up your job, test your squeegee pressure using the "fingerprint test". After a single print pass, run a clean finger across the screen mesh just above the image area. If your finger picks up a full smear of ink, you're using too much pressure. If it leaves a slight chalky trace in the valleys of your print, your squeegee pressure is dialed in perfectly!
