Reclaiming Hybrid Emulsions - Adjusting for Better Results
Over the past few months, many shops have switched to hybrid emulsions like CCI HXT, CCI GTX, Chromaline Hydro X, and Saati PHU and for good reason. These new-generation emulsions are stronger, more durable, and capable of holding better detail and resolution for today’s demanding print runs.
But with that extra durability comes a slight trade-off when it’s time to reclaim.
What We’re Seeing in the Field
Based on recent in-shop testing, standard emulsion remover mixes aren’t always strong enough for hybrids.
If you’re seeing any of the following during reclaim, your ratio is likely too weak:
- “Gunking” or slimy residue
- Emulsion coming off in chunks or sheets instead of dissolving
- Needing extra scrubbing or second applications
When properly mixed, hybrid emulsions should “melt off” cleanly, just like traditional photopolymer emulsions; no chunks, no haze.
The Fix: Adjust Your Emulsion Remover Ratio
If your remover is currently mixed at a 1:25 ratio, it’s time to strengthen the mix.
Hybrid emulsions simply need a touch more chemical strength to break down their tougher crosslinking.
Recommended adjustment:
- Start by trying 1:20
- If reclaim still feels slow or clumpy, go up to 1:15
Products tested:
- Easiway 500
- Easiway Supra
- CCI Gem Zyme
All performed well once mixed at the slightly stronger ratios.
Why It Matters
Hybrid emulsions are designed to stand up to longer runs, aggressive inks, and tougher washes, so it makes sense they resist reclaim a bit more.
The good news is the chemical increase is minimal, but knowing the difference upfront saves time, frustration, and chemical waste in your reclaim department.
Pro Tip
Label your reclaim station for hybrid emulsions with the adjusted ratio — this small change ensures consistency across shifts and keeps your process smooth.
In short:
Hybrid emulsions = better durability and detail.
Slightly stronger mix = faster, cleaner reclaim.
Keep an eye on your reclaim performance and tweak ratios before you waste time scrubbing what should have rinsed off in seconds.
