WHITE INK: IT'S PROBABLY NOT THE INK!

Printing white ink can feel like chasing a mythical beast. Every printer has said it: “I just need a better white!” But here’s the truth — it’s probably not the ink. While yes, some white inks are a nightmare, more often than not, the culprit is your process.

Let’s break down five key tips to help you achieve bright, consistent, and smooth white prints — without switching inks.

1. Screen Tension: Your Foundation

Your print is only as good as your screen. A properly tensioned screen should be in the 25–30 N/cm² range. If you’re under 20 N/cm², it’s time to restretch. Consistently check and maintain screen tension — it’s the first step to solving your white ink issues.

2. Mesh Selection Matters

Choose the right mesh for the job:

  • Manual printers: 110–125 mesh

  • Automatics: 156–180 mesh

Whenever possible, opt for thin thread mesh — the increased open area improves printability and helps lay ink on top of the fabric rather than forcing it through.

3. Coating Consistency: EOM & RZ

No need to get overly technical, but know this:

  • Coating technique matters — a 2/2 round-edge coat is common for white ink screens.

  • Smooth emulsion surface (RZ) is just as important as stencil thickness (EOM).

Smoother = faster print speed = better white prints.

4. Keep It Sharp

Dull squeegees ruin prints. Stick with:

  • 70/90/70 triple durometer for most white applications

  • Harder squeegees (up to 85 duro) help control deposit

  • Keep it sharp — sharpen or replace regularly

5. Speed, Pressure, Angle

The goal is ink on top, not pushed into the garment. Use:

  • High speed, low pressure, low angle

  • Dial in these variables on your auto or manual press

The right combination makes the ink release smoother and reduces fibrillation.

Process Over Product

Don’t chase the “perfect white ink.” Instead, build the perfect process. Once your screens, mesh, coating, and press settings are dialed in, your white ink will start behaving the way you always wanted it to.
