On the press, setup is the single most time-consuming part of the day. Every minute you spend "fiddling" with registration is a minute the press isn't making money. Mastering a lightning-fast, precise setup is the easiest way to "hack" your schedule and gain hours of production time every week.
How: The Pro-Level Pre-Registration Workflow
To stop the guessing games, you need a system that ensures your screens are aligned before they ever touch the press.
- Stage Your Assets First: Never start a setup until your "job-in-a-box" is ready. This includes screens, inks, and garments organized on a mobile staging cart.
- Standardize Your Screen Placement: Whether using traditional film or a CTS (Computer-to-Screen)system, use a carrier sheet or a template to ensure the design is burned in the exact same spot on every screen.
- Deploy a Pre-Registration System (Tri-Loc or Similar): This is the industry gold standard. Use a registration master board to "pin" your screens in place during the exposure process. By locking the screen into a fixed position using Tri-Loc pins, you ensure the art is mathematically aligned to the screen frame.
- The "Drop-In" Setup: Once at the press , use the Tri-Loc pallet or another pre reg pallet to lock each screen into the print head. Because the design was burned in a fixed position, the screens should drop into "near-perfect" registration immediately.
- Micro-Registration Fine-Tuning: Use your press’s XY micro-registration knobs to make the final, hair-width adjustments. Always move the screen from the "home" position to avoid putting unnecessary stress on the mesh.
- The Test Print (Strike-Off): Print your underbase first, flash it, and then layer your top colors to check for "halos" or gaps.

Pro Tip-Using film with no pre-registration pallet? Take a piece of corrugated sign (yard sign) and trace and cut to match your pallet. Create a grid that will match your pre-reg template. Tape to your pallet so it doesn’t move and place your film on the grid. The thickness of the sign will be perfect to match off contact, making it quick and easy to line up your screens.
