If you try to print all of these the exact same way, you’re asking for dye migration, fuzzy prints, and mid-run headaches. Here is how you set up your press, workflow, and ink chemistry to knock out mixed orders smoothly without losing your sanity.
Why Smart Job Planning Matters
When you mix polyesters, cottons, and fleece in a single run, every fabric behaves differently. Polyester and performance garments suffer from dye migration,where fabric dyes heat up during flashing or curing and bleed into your ink, turning crisp white logos a dull pink or gray. Fleece, on the other hand, dumps heavy lint and fuzz onto your platens.
Pre-planning your job workflow prevents downtime, keeps your colors vibrant, and saves you from ruining expensive garments that you’d otherwise have to re-order and re-print.
How to Set Up a Flawless Mixed-Fabric Run
Follow this step-by-step game plan to optimize press time and maintain top-tier print quality.
- Step 1: Switch to Low-Cure Inks Across the Board
Instead of swapping inks mid-run, lock in a quality low-cure ink (or low-cure low-bleed white underbase). Low-cure inks gel and cure at lower temperatures. This keeps fabric temperatures below the point where poly dyes turn to gas, stopping dye migration cold on performance fabrics while curing safely on cotton.

Step 2: Sequence Garments
Never print fleece first! Sequence your run strategically:
- Performance/100% Poly First: Print these while your platens are completely lint-free and your dryer temperatures are strictly dialed in.
- Cotton & 50/50 Blends Next: Transition into your standard tees.
- Fleece Last: Hoodies release massive amounts of loose fibers (fuzzies) onto your platens. Saving fleece for last keeps your shirt platens clean for the rest of the order.
- Step 3: Prep Your Platens (Don't Be Lazy!)
Before starting the run, and right before loading fleece, apply fresh pallet tape or thoroughly clean off old adhesive and lint build-up. Fuzzies trapped on sticky platens create uneven print surfaces, leading to fibrillation (fabric fibers poking through the ink) and blurry details. Taking 5 minutes to re-tape saves 45 minutes of troubleshooting later.
- Step 4: Monitor Flash & Dryer Temps
Keep a tight eye on your flash unit and conveyor dryer temps. Fleece is thicker and absorbs more heat, while light poly shirts heat up fast. Use a donut probe or TempTest™ strips to ensure your low-cure ink reaches its required gel temperature without overheating the polyester fibers underneath.
